Many, many years ago, Fathers of children attending Catholic Schools were made to join The Holy Name Society of their parish. Mothers were required to join the Rosary Society. Times, of course, have changed. Today, many organizations within the church have members that are in multiple organizations. Many organizations are so fractured that they are teetering on their effectiveness within our churches today. Our Holy Name Society is doing pretty well in our parish. It is still a Men's Organization, however there are some Holy Name Societies that have both men and women members. Since this is the Men's Corner, be it Holy Name Society or Knights of Columbus or Men's Cornerstone... what issues or concerns or what wonderful things are happening with your Men's Organization... Please share. Blessings, Joe

Oh, "Mother".... you are so funny!! ;D But, I'm sure that you can add something... What are your feelings about "Men's Only" organizations within the church... Many of our Holy Name Society members are quite elderly... some in their 90's... Bless them! And it's very cut and dried. Men with the Holy Name Society. Women with the Rosary Society. That's it! That's how it was back in the 1930's and that's how it will ALWAYS be... But some of our newer, younger members in their 40's... They can't understand the separation. What are your views on that, MysticRose...? Blessings, Joe

Sir I am Maronite and Traditional Are you sure you still wnt to hear my views? I assent to VII and other things because the Church in Her Wisdom has said that they are necessary and needed and I do nto question the Magesterium of the Church, as I believe then for me, that is tantamount to questioning the Lord's authority as well. I will say though that VII has ot taken away from me or any other Catholic the ability to Worship in any litugical Rite that is expressly approved by the Church, and the Tridentine and Maronite Masses are valid Masses in the Church to which no special circumstances are attached to their attendance. So therefore in this my beliefs are valid and I am in Communion with the Holy See of Rome. Therefore other such observances, and traditions such as the waering of headcoverings for women for example, amongst other things, should still be observed and I do so rightly. The errors of men and the abusiveness of men in the actions that they have taken on behalf of VII as in the spirit of it is what is the problem not the documents themselves. I have seen people contend, laity especially that things have been changed with this document, or that the understanding of prior documents were expanded upon so much the prior meanings have now changed. This is the right though of the Magesterium to do with the guidance of the Holy Spirit and in this we are required to assent to it. Being part of a Heirarchal system of things is quite different and takes time for us I think to adjust to as Americans because we are so used to a Democratic viewpoint. In that of Heirarchy the Hierarchy is the ruling class and we obey that class. Obediance has always been a serious problem and will continue top be a serious problem since we have the thought process of the evangelics that say they we are independent of such Hierarchy, when in fact the Lord says that we are not independent of it, but must rely upon it and listen to it. The thoughts of those who are older and Wiser than we are I think holds creedence and always should it is not that they ar behind the times somehow but that they have seen the damege done by such an attitude, therefore they reject it. Therefore for them it is very cut and dry. There are reasons that tradtionally we have had only men's organizations and only women's organizations. The biggest reason is that we play different roles in the Church, it is when you start to blur those lines that you see such dissention such as th influx of women now that think they should become priests or deacons .... this is ludicrous to think of... Gender roles have been specific since the dawn of creation and if the Lord sought to make them thus then we should not defy that in anyway. It is not that I believe that women play less of an active participation or part in the Church because I believe that they through our Mother Mary play such a part that it is a vital one indeed, one that cannot be done away with and is completely necessary as is the man's part. It is like that of a marriage of sorts .... You must have all of the parts to make up the whole of it. Just like in Heaven we have Our Mother as Queen and rightfully so, because she completes the picture she completes the Family... So therefore you must have all the necessary components here and one of them is the women of the Church they are vital to the men and necessary... The Lord never made us unequal as people assume because of our genders and because of the decrees to submittance to our husbands as we would the Lord, as He also said of the husbands to elevate the wives and to treat them as they would their own bodies.... Everyone also knows or else they should the Lord also believes that our Bodies themselves are temples unto the Lord so if men are to treat women with the same regard they have for that temple then what does that say? I Believe it is all in the example shown by this, I think that we are to be such examples for the Lord that we have to show this even in these small things we do such as the distinctions we make between th sexes sot that the lines do not get blurred, so that the Church does not get led astray with modern thinking that is detrimental to our way of life and our beliefs.... That would and could be detrimental to our very Salvation.... Pax Christi Mystic

Thank you for your input !
We are doing absolutely wonderful things with our Holy Name Society.
I am humbled by how many positive things are included in the National Association of Holy Name Societies' newsletter.
But the proudest, I think, is my formulating a Junior Confraternity of Holy Name Society, where children, both boys and girls from the ages of 9 - 18 are members.
I've been fortunate enough to have taken some of them to religious plays, and other activities. (Last year we went to a small farm, a hiking trail, a place for ice cream and onto the Youth Mass...)
I think it's neat to be able to lead by showing good moral character as well as the love that our men have for the Lord.
What great things are you proud of that you can share with us about your Men's Organization...??
Blessings, Joe

Even if you aren't a member of a Men's Organization within your church, (such as the Knights of Columbus, Men's Cornerstone, Holy Name Society, Catholic War Veterans, etc. etc. etc.) what positive things are the Men doing in your church... Is there anything "special'... It's good to share because there may be a program that I may want to institute at my parish with some of the organizations that I belong to. Here's a case in point. I read in a church bulletin how the Knights of Columbus were putting a Penny Drive together, with the money raised going to a needy student to help pay for their tuition at their Parish Catholic School. I thought it was a pretty neat idea. So... I created a "Pennies from Heaven for Bibles" Program. Through pennies (and some very generous donations), we were able to donate 3 cases of Catholic Bibles, 1 case of Large Print Bibles, Crucifixes and Rosaries to a Nursing Home for Veterans. That's a lot of pennies.... Blessings, Joe

I do have a problem I would like to talk to you about
I have a young woman that keeps to herself in one of my private boards called the Abby ... Essentially it has been her place to talk to us privately but since everything has picked up and since I am also starting work on another board.....
I wanted to know if I could change your category so that you would be also able to see her baord too and help with the many questions that she has?
She is Catholic but was never Catechized properly so does not know hardly anything about our Faith but is eager to learn.... Woul;d you be up for this? I asked if I could let some people in that I thought could help her and she is allowing me the option to allow a few members access....

Why, of course...!!
I'm really humbled by your asking... Thank you so much!
Please tell her that I am approaching only my 6th year of teaching CCD (Confraternity of Christine Doctrine) and I'm on a Learning Journey as well.
Please tell her that God is so Awesome and that He has done wondrous things in all of our lives... that each day is a Blessing.
...And that each person that we encounter... is an opportunity to uplift, to help and to love --- not only that person, but our Lord, as well.
Thank you again.
Blessings, Joe

The Holy Name Society, like many organizations within the Catholic Church, is in danger of dying out in many churches across the United States. I have heard of a man who moved from Ohio to Arizona because of health issues and all along, he was very, very active in his Parish's Holy Name Society.... until his move.
While in Arizona, he informed me that there are very few Holy Name Societies out in Arizona and he was deeply saddened by it. (He later joined my Holy Name Society as a "member in pectoris".... "member of the heart" and has been quite active with my Holy Name Society in spite of the fact that he is 2,500 miles away....)
It's troubling that the oldest lay organization within the Catholic Church, founded in 1274 A.D. has its very back against the wall as they fight for their survival.
On a more positive note is the establishment of the Junior Confraternity within the Holy Name Society where members are boys and girls from the ages of 9 - 18 years of age... and... the murmurings of the founder of The Holy Name Society, Blessed John of Vercelli... of having some potential miracles attrributed to him in his name. There are positio papers being drawn up and the long process of elevating Blessed John of Vercelli to sainthood begins. His canonization to Sainthood would be such a big boost and a shot in the arm to the Holy Name Society...!
